Everyone is enlightened, were that not so enlightenment would not be possible for anyone.  To be enlightened, by definition, is to become aware of something you were not aware of before that moment, something that is already present.  Enlightenment is, in the common parlance, taken to be something extraordinary, when in fact, the opposite is the case.  Awareness itself rather than the endless objects of awareness shines out from the background into the foreground and is often described as a sudden, dramatic experience, the laughing Buddha, the whirling dancing dervishes, the shouts of eureka.  It can also be a sure slow dawning.  In either case it is already so.  You cannot cross over to the other side; this is the other side!
